As you might have already read, CyanogenMod 9 RC1 (release candidate 1) is out for 37 devices. That’s a great sign, but there’s no trace of the TouchPad CM9 RC1 download yet, and all I can see on the official site is Alpha 2 and nightlies, so I’m still waiting, not wanting to touch the nightlies (daily test releases with various fixes), and I definitely recommend the same to non-technically-inclined users – stay away from the nightlies.
IMHO the nightlies are not worth it – they often contain good fixes but sometimes one fix will break some other functionality. Since my HP Touchpad still works reasonably well with CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 2, I decided to wait. We’ve been waiting a long time though, and I’m very curious to see what the RC1 will bring. One included and highly desired improvement will be the working microphone, since there already is a standalone fix that will be built into the RC1 version. Another possible, but not absolutely certain software update we’d like to see is a working camera, so we don’t have to reboot to webOS to do a Skype video chat.
Where to Look
To check whether there’s a new release of CyanogenMod 9 for the HP TouchPad, go to:
Look under “stable mod” or “release candidate”. Nightlies are there, too, but for now I’ve been staying away from them. Perhaps I’ll take the plunge if there’s still no RC soon.
In any case, patience is a virtue. Your TouchPad is more than ever likely to have another optional fully-functional OS installation. It’s about time we see an “official” RC for CM9 for this device and I believe it will be here soon.
